Gloomy Bear Arm Pillows. Back On The Market, But Only In Korea?

A couple years back I was looking for a somewhat ‘unique’ gift to send to friends and acquaintances. I pride myself on being able to find interesting items online to send to others, and I considered this particular case a huge win. The item in question was a Gloomy Bear arm pillow. I bought 3, shortly after which both Vancouver stores that carried them sold out.

Gloomy Bear, for those of you not familiar is the product of a Japanese graphic designer named Mori Chack. I chose to overlook the fact that the claws have blood on them and rather expect that recipients would enjoy the uniqueness instead of dwell on the details :)

Who got them and what were their reactions?

My accountant
Reaction: Laughter to the point of tears.
Long term assessment: No idea. I will be following up to pay him for this years’ services and plan to inquire into both his daughter, and his wife’s reactions.

Former co-worker & children
Reaction: Surprise and mild concern which I attribute to the fact that he has several children at home and promises to lead to a significant amount of chasing and unintended destruction.
Long term assessment: Not applicable. Within 3 hours of the parcel being opened the aforementioned children proceeded to race through the house destroying everything in their path as predicted. Unfortunately I had not considered the added confusion / aggression / destructive power resulting from the addition of two rather large dogs added to the mix. As a result in this case the limited edition Gloomy Bear arm pillow lasted roughly 4 happy, joy-filled hours.

My takeaway? If I ever see these things available in a store again I’m buying as many as I can reasonably afford because kids LOVE them (and I don’t mind them either).

Bedroom Decoration From An Etsy Favourite

YankeeDoodled Etsy art store. Great pieces for your home or for the children's room. Robots, aquatic life and scenery. Creative, unique art pieces.

So you’ve got a couple rooms in that new house whose walls are ‘lacking’ a little something. I’ve got an artist for you over at Etsy, and these pieces will be perfect whether its your room that needs decorating, or the kids’.

The seller is Yankeedoodled and they’ve been featured here before in one of the earlier cephalopod posts.

This time around we’ll give them an exclusive and provide a taste of some of my favourite pieces.

Of the currently available pieces my favourite is definitely BOT which shouldn’t surprise anyone given the previous robot paintings and sculptures that have been featured. I like, and so will your children… that I pretty much guarantee.

Along the robot vein are Blue Eye and Until Death Do I Part… the single eye in the first is sure to arouse the little ones’ curiosity while the gold tooth on UDDIP tugs at my old school heart strings.

The other pieces I’ll mention are the ones that got me thinking back to my days keeping tropical fish. If you have kids who love to visit the local aquarium you’ll want to have a look at Jellies, Jellies II, Jellies III and That’s Bull Kelp which, I’d consider as a set if space and budget allows.

Ok, enough of my swooning over these pieces. If you want to see more, get over to YankeeDoodled. I need to get back to work so I can afford to get a couple myself.

Wooden Yo-Yos, Deer Portraits, And Solar Motorbikes

Fawn and Forest has some cool yet environmentally sensitive products for kids and adults alike.

All of these items are available from Fawn & Forest, a site that carries many baby, child and youth items I’ve seen before, but that is itself new to me. The site design is really nice, which does a ton for the items themselves.

I’ll leave you to hunt and peck for items of interest, but the following jumped out at me.

e. soule Little Deer framed photograph.
Suddenly it’s real natural wood yo-yo.
Twinkle living deer antlers rug.
naef motosolino solar-powered toy motorcycle and sidecar.

Fall Down Tree Three Blind Mice - excellent art for your aspiring artist.

I’m a huge fan of Luke Chueh, Joe Ledbetter and other such artists… but their art is more appropriate for an older person’s room rather than a childs (though one might argue that for Ledbetter).

Fall Down Creative (found via DesignMom) has some cool art that while not quite as edgy as Chueh provides an acceptable alternative in my mind.

If you’re looking for a fun print to fill an empty wall give Fall Down Tree a look… but give me a few minutes to grab a copy of Three Mice That Are Blind before you do.

Got A Kid With A Passion For Insects?

Butterfly prints and cards offered by Lushbella on Etsy

I was one of those kids who spent hours outside looking at and catching insects. I still have that passion with me today, though more time is spent searching for ‘bug shows’ on HD than out in the fields on my belly looking for something new.

Etsy seller Lushbella has some beautiful postcards and archival quality prints of butterflies that would suit any kid or adult that fit the profile above. Have a look and tell me what you think.

Niche Post. Parents With Children Who Dislike Sharks Please Disregard

If I were your kid I'd love Casey Millard's shark paintings

You’ve been warned.

I tend to have an odd (relative to most people) taste in art. I’m not a hunter, but for some reason I’m curious about taxidermy. I like art by Luke Chueh and Blaine Fontana… and enjoy bonsai and tropical fish. Weird.

Anyway. I’ve always liked sharks, and Home Canary recently posted about an artist that appears to have a serious, albeit somewhat strange love of sharks. I’ll leave you to decide whether or not your kid would like these, but I suspect that there are a few of you out there that wouldn’t mind sharing some wall space with these creative pieces.

The artist’s name is Casey Riordan Millard and apparently here pieces can presently be seen at Chicago’s Packer Schopf Gallery. If I lived there I would go. I hope some of you will.

Your kids will love grilled cheese that looks like Pokemon

Home Canary posted about this product, and I’m reposting here? Why? Cause I expect at some point a retailer will start making these with patterns that are less Grandma and more Baby Stewie.

When that day comes, I will have my PayPal account ready.

Until that day, feast your eyes on Minale Media’s Table Manners.

Masterpieces by children for the world

Here’s a fun idea for a blog. Allow parents and kids to submit drawings by children for posting. Simple as that. Each image is followed by a title, the artist’s name and age, and the poster’s name as well as a brief explanation of what was going through the kid’s head when it was created.

I haven’t had time to dig very deep into the site, but based on a quick review of the first couple pages my favourite is “Fish in heels farting, pooping, peeing and carrying a gift of farts.” by Sadie. Nice work Sadie :)

Rattle-N-Roll. Make sure your lovely little baby makes the best spot on the fridge. Front and center.

We’ve all received those boring new baby announcements in the mail, or Little Gary Graduated Public School alerts. If you’re going to take the time to address the envelopes and mail the things out you may as well be sure the recipients will remember them… at least for a minute or two before throwing them out.

Rattle-N-Roll promises to keep you child’s mug displayed prominently for many weeks to come as their announcement is given a cherished position on the recipient’s refrigerator.

Rock-N-Roll designs your child into a music poster-esque masterpiece for delivery to friends and relatives. Want an Obey Giant Propaganda theme? I suspect they could pull it off. Personally, I think I’d request something more along the lines of a birth announcement with a Chinese Communist propaganda theme.

Welcome to the real world baby.

Alphabet video comparing a child and an adult's attempts at calligraphy.

Give this video a bit of time to work through the credits… it’s worth it to see the actual video itself. A simple comparison of an (admittedly very talented) adult and a young boy moving through the alphabet character by character with paintbrush and paper.
